We recently had the pleasure of visiting good friends in Manhattan, New York. They made sure to bring us to all their favorite spots to eat, one of which was The Smith Restaurant in Midtown. Their menus feature a selection of farm fresh, familiar and creative bistro dishes. Something we love most about them is that they work hard to use ingredients from local farmers and purveyors. They say this helps them serve food “from people we know and trust.” We obviously love restaurants committed to sustainability – it shows they truly care about their guests and the preservation of our foodie future.
Brunch is our favorite meal, if you haven’t figured that out already, and The Smith did not disappoint. We were lucky enough to only have a half hour wait (wait times for brunch are typically longer, considering how popular the spot is). We spent that half hour strolling around nearby Central Park. A text message alerted us 10 minutes before our table was ready. This was a tremendously convenient luxury, because waiting in a cramped reception area is never fun. We were seated outside on this particular beautiful summer morning. We got a round of creative and cleverly crafted drinks.
Two of our favorite dishes are below, the Ranchero Scramble and the Avocado Toast. The Ranchero Scramble was complete with a spicy chipotle salsa, black beans with cheddar and avocado over tortillas. The dish was hearty and filling, with fantastic spicy and cheesy flavors in every bite. We also ordered a side of fresh fruit with this beauty.
Avocado lovers, listen up: the Smith’s Avocado Toast goes above and beyond. Normally, restaurants serve this dish with half an avocado smashed onto a bland piece of toast. The Smith serves you a Mount Everest of avocado. Check out the pic below. Creamy avocado chucks are mixed with lemon and red pepper flakes, and topped with a freshly poached egg (runny yolk in all it’s glory) and local greens. This. Is. How. Avocado. Toast. Should. Be.
We absolutely loved our brunch at The Smith, and can’t wait to visit another one of their five locations for dinner and drinks.
